It’s amazing how life still gives me these little surprises. When I was young I always wanted to be a radio presenter, and by the age of 21 of was doing just that. Interesting enough, at the age of 15 I was introduced to singing through karaoke, another love I enjoyed but never explored.
I joined a band at the of 20 and have been singing in cover bands ever since. I always wanted to sing in a stage production, but I never thought I would. I either didn’t think that I would make the cut, or I simply didn’t try audition, because my life was so hectic with other activities.
Now, almost 20 years later, I was asked by the legendary Mike McCullagh from McCully’s Workshop, to join the cast of Rocktober – a tribute to the Monsters of Rock from the 60′s through to the 90′s. And I am singing covers that I never thought I’d do: Black Sabbath, Metallica, Pink Floyd and Steppenwolf, and I am doing backing harmonies, which is forcing me to concentrate on my vocal abilities. And I am loving the challenge.
I am also the MC of the show, which gives me the platform to interact with the audience, which I love doing.
I’ve done two shows so far, and I am on such a rush, I can’t wait to do more. I am also surrounded by musicians that are on the next level. The musical director is a young chap named Kyle Petersen, who is classically trained on piano/keyboards, and just got back from the legendary Burklee Music school in the USA. His brother Darren Petersen is a phenomenal drummer, Juandre Schultz and Warren Lomberg are burning the axes, and Karl Herring is just a great bass player.
I am also sharing the stage with two great vocalists: Clarence Fink aka Clarence Stanley, and Liza Louw. What a great team these bunch of guys and gal are.
The moral of the story, never give up on your dream – it will happen, sooner or later.
Oh by the way, if you wanna come see the show, book here. We’re playing until the 8th of November every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday night from 20h00.
